Q & A with Demi Boelsterli
Written by Jason Feist

Hey Demi, First off, I think a big congratulation is in order. This past weekend you took your 2nd consecutive title in the women's division at the Rincon Classic! How are you feeling about the big win?

Thank you, Thank you! I’m very stoked to be involved with the contest, it really brings the local surfing community together for a good weekend of surfing and smiles. I'm also very please to have won after clocking in hundreds of hours at the ‘Con! It definitely helps me feel like I am making a bit of progress with my surfing ability and knowledge.

The women's final was definitely one of the most exciting heats of the entire event, not only did you drop that first big score of 8 and change, but then you had some technical difficulties! What happened?

Well, I'm glad to hear that it was entertaining for everyone! Obviously, I had a great time surfing Rincon with only 5 other people out, but after I got that longer wave and was pulling out on the inside, one of my fins busted out on a big ol' rock! I was pretty bummed because I really like that board and I didn't have my back up board ready. That was definitely an amateur mistake! But, luckily my buddy and local aerial master Antoine Allaine was testing out one of your boards, I think it was a 5'8" swallow tail. He saw what happened, ran right up to me, handed me the board and said the magic words, "This is one of the best boards I've ever ridden!" I think that without those words I would have had a different mindset and maybe not had been as confidence to surf as well. I've learned that having a positive attitude on stuff like that really helps. Ha, ha!

Can you talk a little about what is running through your mind when you have to face off against Lakey Peterson? She is a great surfer and I am sure that she was aiming for revenge after that 10-point exchange you two had last year. But, you seemed real calm and confident going into this event and I was just curious if you have any strategies up your sleeve?

Well, I was a bit nervous paddling out, just because all the people on the beach and whatnot. But, to be honest, if she had beaten me, it clearly would have been well earned. The girl rips! Before the heat started we were kind of laughing about it. A lot of people were saying stuff like "You guys ready to battle it out?" But both of us were really just out there to surf and have a good time. We were singing songs together as we paddled out, it was a great time! It almost seemed like we were paddling out for a free surf at Hammonds or something, so that helped me. As for a strategy, I just wanted to get some waves and do some fancy turns on them.

I know that you have recently been picked up by Glas Apparel and Buell Wetsuits, do you have anything exciting planned for this year?

Yeah, I'm very stoked! I really like both companies, Buell wetsuits are really flexible and lightweight and Glas has very artistic approach witch is epic! I've never really had a company, besides board makers, be interested in helping me out, so I am very excited and appreciative of them for having some confidence in my surfing and hooking me up with some good, fresh gear. I don’t have any big plans due to my unfortunate and recent knee injury. Dave Schauber, of Glas, is working with me on filming a few clips for his next Glas video, which I would be really stoked on! I haven't seen much footage of myself surfing so I will be very excited if it works out!

It's about that time to get in there and shape you up a few new boards. What seems to be working best for you right now?

Oh gosh, they all have been working really well! I love my pintails and always had a tough time getting off of them. But since I broke out the fins on my favorite round pin (5’10 OG), I've been ridding my squash tail (5’9” KC7) and its been working way better than I imagined. The squash releases a bit easier and gives my surfing a whole different feel. In my mind that’s always a good thing. You know…. switch it up a bit? But yeah, the boards work great and I am very, very pleased!

Well, I know that we will be seeing some big things from you Demi and we are beyond stoked to have you on board with J7! Congrats on you’re back-to-back wins at the 2011 Rincon Classic and thanks for cruising by to catch up!

Thanks man! I'm very stoked too!
